Bookworks
Lula Crowder 's work appears in numerous books published by the Decatur Dixon Press. DDP is the first publishing house to double as a work of experimental art. Founded by a visual anthropologist + an art historian-curator, DDP seeks interdisciplinary content that re-thinks the possible, even challenging traditional book organization & structure. Crowder's bookworks include drawings - both paper and digital - that present alternative readings or visual undertexts to well known classics like Zweig's Chess Game, Clay's Insect Intelligence, or Capek's play on human rights, Rossum's Universal Robots.Signed copies of books available upon request.

artworks on archival paper
As a visual anthropologist and scholar of semiotics, political economy, and material culture, my artistic practice under the name Lula Crowder explores the tension between sacred geometry and the 'unraveling grid' of modernity. Original works on paper - from intricate line studies to charcoal to vibrant watercolor abstractions - are sensory investigations into how we perceive, organize, and respond to the world around us. Based in my Savannah studio, I create one-of-a-kind compositions that invite viewers to find meaning within layers of color and line.Lula Crowder is a bohemian of the highest order. She is inspired by the creative potential of texture, line, color, technology and innovation. Classically trained, she has offered curated shows as well as her own work in the salons of New York, San Francisco, Savannah, and elsewhere. Her book illustrations are best known for appearing in manilla envelopes tucked into library editions and borrowed collections as gifts to future readers. Inspired by artists as diverse as Wanda Gag, Ray Johnson, Lebbeus Woods, and Mike Kelley, her drawings, writing, and explorations of new technologies always add a fresh and at times winningly critical dimension.
All works are hand-drawn using fine materials on archival paper. For inquiries regarding exhibitions, availability, custom commissions, or Decatur Dixon Press publications, please reach out or visit the Etsy shop.
